The Next Big Things!

The world of IT is constantly changing, and new names and terms pop up with annoying regularity. It can be difficult to keep up with the techies and know what they are going on about, so to help, we’ve put together a list a of 7 names you're bound to see more of this year!

Cloud Computing - Smaller1. Cloud Computing
It’s a bit like the electricity grid; software and information is shared across the internet on demand. If you're old enough to remember mainframe computing, it’s a very similar idea.

2. Netbook
A lighter, smaller and cheaper Laptop computer suitable for accessing the internet, hence the name. They tend to have cut down versions of hardware and software on them.

3. Virtualisation
You buy one big powerful server and divide it up into smaller virtual servers. This means you can run multiple servers for different departments or companies.

4. Solid State Hard Disks
New hard disks will use Flash memory (no moving parts) rather than the spinning disks used in standard hard drives. These should last longer, be smaller, faster, and cooler and use less power than conventional Hard Disks.

5. Tablet PC
Tablet PCA laptop without a standard keyboard as it comes with a touch screen. These have been around for a while, but the new Apple iPad has really put these on the map. You should expect most companies to release models (if they haven’t already). The industry believes these will replace books for all you readers out there!

6. VDI - Virtual Desktop Infrastructure.
Going back to Cloud Computing and Virtualisation, this is where a desktop is delivered to you but separated from your PC. This means you can have your Windows XP or 7 desktop wherever you are.

7. Android Phones
Android phones, backed by Google, are a new wave of phones based on a new operating system. They're a bit like the iPhones - but Google would say they have more functionality! Soon to become widely available, you'll just have to try them and decide for yourself!
