Snow... Floods... Volcanoes...
What will Disrupt your business Next?
Most businesses have been caught completely un-prepared for the natural disasters that have affected us this year. What - you may ask - is next?
The recent halt to all flights in and out of this country has had an effect on many businesses, including ours – one of our field engineers is still stuck out in Africa! But, I’m pleased to say, our customers on WorkPlaceLive have been less affected than most.
With the ability to work anywhere, and a large number of clients enjoying a well deserved Easter break, many of them have been able to work uninterrupted, regardless of the fact that they are stuck enjoying South America or the Canary Islands for an extra few days!
While WorkPlaceLive is one way of ensuring that it’s business as usual, we think it’s important for all businesses do a little disaster planning, so we have put together a few suggestions:
- As we have said before, a short disaster recovery plan - even if it’s one page long - can give you a head start if the worst occurs. You should include where you would move to, how you would get new equipment in a hurry and how to re-direct your phone and fax lines etc.
- Make sure all the information you need is documented and stored in a second location (ISP Providers and passwords, telephone numbers etc.)
- Make sure you backup all your Data! And that your backup is working and taken off site - or use a remote backup system.
- Build as much redundancy into your I.T. systems as you can afford. Mirrored or Raid disks on a server is a must.
- Get the longest life uninterruptable power supply (UPS) you can afford for your server. If you do have power cuts or spikes, this means your server will be protected and can shut itself down correctly.
- Protect yourself as much as you can from random theft, employee malice or vandalism. For example, we security screen our employees back 10 years.
- Practice what you plan! This way you can make sure you haven’t missed anything.
