Top 10 Things to do if you have PC's and servers!

  1. Make sure your backup is completed and removed offsite on a regular basis. The bigger a company you are, the more often this should be done.  10 people losing one weeks work is 375 hours and equates to about £5000 in wages alone! Can you afford to lose this?

  2. Make sure that Anti-Virus, Anti-Spam and Anti-Spyware are up to date and running on all computers and servers. Having these fail safes in place saves you time and money, so there's no reason not to have them.
  3. Make sure Microsoft Windows updates are up to date on all computers and Servers. (Check by going into Internet Explorer and find Windows Update (under safety in IE8). They help ensure your equipment is running at optimum efficiency, and also load any patches or fixes that Microsoft have released.
  4. Top 10Have a UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply) on your server. This will protect it from power spikes and also run the server down safely if you have a power cut. With more power cuts expected in the next few years this may prove to be a shrewd investment.
  5. Make sure you use your computer correctly to avoid injuries, see this government guide on how to correctly work with VDU's.
  6. Have an email, internet usage and security policy in place This helps to protect yourself and your business from miss-use.
  7. If you are a limited company, make sure your website and e-mails show all the information that's legally required. By law you have to show your registered address and company registration number.
  8. Have a disaster recovery plan in place, even if this is a one pager with a brief outline of what you would do if disaster strikes your organisation.
  9. Check your disk space available, especially on servers as they don’t like running out. Also do some housekeeping. Deleting temp files and unwanted data is a good start. There is plenty of software out there which can help to do this for you.
  10. Clean your keyboard mouse and your phone whilst your there! A recent study showed that the average mouse has 1,676 germs per square inch and your phone has a massive 25,127 germs per square inch. As your average toilet seat only has 49 germs per square inch, i'd get cleaning!
