How to find and work with a Website Developer

Web DesignThere’s definitely an air of mystery surrounding websites and it’s easy to get taken in (and often to the cleaners) by those who would have you believe it really is rocket science. It isn’t.

Obviously there really is an element of magic involved in creating websites, but it’s far better to be empowered with a greater level of understanding, albeit in layman’s terms, than it is to be blinded with science.

Of the difficulties faced in knowing how to commission a web-developer, it can be equally hard trying to find one! Recommendation is always best, as-is asking local businesses who already have a website and finding out how they got on; what their experiences were and whether they feel they got what they wanted at the price they were quoted.

Having found one or more potential developers here are some pointers to consider before commissioning one:

  • Look at their portfolio - it’s a pretty good indication of their general competence and level of experience and knowledge.

  • Is website development their full-time business? (or are they working from a bedroom in their spare time?)

  • Have they previously developed the type of website you’re after?

  • Do they attempt to do every aspect themselves (design, planning, programming, development, hosting, search engine optimisation etc.)? Being a one-man-band is not a crime but very few developers are really accomplished in all areas. What staff/resources do they have?

  • Do they ask you questions about your business and what you want to achieve with the website? Are they interested in its success?

  • What is the value of websites they have previously developed?

  • Will you own or rent your website?

  • Can you manage the content yourself - or will you have to constantly go back to the developer and pay on an ad-hoc basis?

  • Can they provide a maintenance contract for ongoing support?

  • Can they meet your deadline?

  • Will you get a contract?

  • Do you think you could work with them, i.e. do you like them?

There a many questions take into account when working with a website developer and those above are a few basics.

A website is a big commitment and often a hefty capital expense so it pays to get it right first time. Do your research, know what you want, be specific and above all work with the developer.
